Motion Parkour Earned Programs

Hey Parkour parents and students!
If your Parkour athlete just joined Motion or is eligible to move to a new program like Discovery or Mastery congrats! This guide will give you some helpful information about what to expect, and how to understand Motion’s Parkour Programming
History of Parkour as a coachable sport
First, its important to understand that the discipline of Parkour is very, very young; it’s been in the general public’s awareness for fewer than 25 years. The concept of teaching parkour to students as a curriculum based program is even newer. For those who love and want to promote parkour, there isn’t typically as strong of an understanding of how to program and teach as you might see in other more traditional youth sports. Football, baseball, soccer - these sports have well understood coaching guidelines, institutional support and cultural understanding that aspiring Parkour programs don’t typically enjoy
However, Motion has been teaching individual youth sports & programming since its inception in 2004. So when we started Parkour classes in 2016, we already had a huge head start in understanding how kids learn and grow, age-specific pedagogies involved in teaching young people, and the best methodologies for how to create program structure for non-traditional sports
Today, we’ve become a pioneering force in the Parkour industry, bringing operational and organizational innovation and guidance to other Parkour gyms around the country. We regularly have owners/operators of other parkour programs visit Tulsa in order to learn from us, and we are regularly invited to speak and present at conferences where Parkour coaches and owners gather.
We don’t say this to brag, but to give you confidence that Motion students are in good hands!
Program Focuses
What does each program focus on, what should parents and students expect?
Fundamentals: Fundamentals is designed to introduce parkour concepts to students, help students "learn how to learn", and help students build a foundation of strength, agility and safety, so that they’re prepared for advancement into higher level programs.
Students will spend 2-6 months (or more if needed) in Fundamentals
Discovery: The Discovery program offers incoming Fundamental students an explosion of new techniques and concepts. We begin to introduce impressive bar/scaff techniques, huge vaults, and what feel like impossible feats of physical ability.
Discovery students will be challenged not just physically with new Parkour skills, but perhaps more importantly, they’ll be challenged mentally and emotionally. They’ll be supported by professional instructors who will guide them through challenging situations that are safe, but new and sometimes difficult. This is vital to help them discover their strengths and begin to form a foundation of physical and mental confidence they can carry not only deeper into their Parkour training, but also everywhere else they go in life
Students will spend 18-36 months (or more if needed) in Discovery
Mastery: Mastery of body, mind, and spirit. Our goal in Mastery is not just to learn more physical skills (although Mastery students absolutely will - in fact, they’ll start their journey into flips, inversions and near-flight), but also for students to truly connect with themselves and to their inner strength. Mastery is about learning to push themselves, expose weakness, build strength and resilience, and truly connect with the spirit of Parkour. A Mastery student’s goal is to start to understand who they are and of what they're truly capable.
Students will spend 24-48 months (or more if needed) in Mastery
Legacy: Legacy is a story that never dies. Students who make it to our Legacy program are the most dedicated, most committed, most focused of Motion students. These young people are learning to write their own stories through accomplishment, effort, giving back and paving new ground. A Legacy student’s goal is to embody the altruism and bravery at the heart of Parkour. To give back, to break new ground, to push boundaries. When they write their chapter in the story or Parkour, what will they have to say?
